Presentation Critiques

Presentation 1 Reviews

Overall I thought the presentation project was very valuable. I learned about many other different contemporary photographers as well as refreshed my knowledge with some spoken about in class. For this assignment, I find it hard to choose a "best" or "worse" presentation, because I thought we all had great strengths and things we could have improved upon as students. Instead, I will point out one presentation I thought did a good job and one that needed improvement.

One of the presentations I thought did a good job and I enjoyed listening to was Emily Durbin. She chose a contemporary photographer I had not heard of before this class. It was clear she did research on her chosen photographer, Jennifer Garza-Cuen. She stood up when doing her presentation, so her voice was projected to the audience. I could tell she had practiced her presentation beforehand. When showing Garza-Cuen's photographs she explained each slide and the concepts the artist had. She also explained her personal opinion of why she enjoys the work. She also was sure to try and maintain eye contact with others around the room. She kept the audience engaged and answered questions after the presentation to the best of her abilities. Overall, I thought the presentation was well done.

A presentation I thought needed improvement was Kelsey Wilson's. She presented the photographer Lorna Simpson. This particular artist we learned in class, so I already had some basic knowledge on the person. When Kelsey presented I don't think she went into enough detail about the artist's work. I think if you chose someone discussed in class you need to make sure to speak about materials the class doesn't already know about. She sat in the chair leaving it hard for people to hear her behind the computer and fidgeted in the chair somewhat. During her presenation, she admitted she wasn't a good public speaker, which to me is not how you project confidence to others. Instead of showing us the website of the photographer, she could of put more photographs on her slides. I think with more preparation Kelsey's presentation could have been more interesting to the audience.
